The Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), is the largest public institution dedicated to research in Spain and the third largest in Europe with the mission to foster, coordinate, develop and promote scientific and technological research, of a multidisciplinary nature, in order to contribute to advancing knowledge and economic, social and cultural development, as well as to train staff and advise public and private entities on this matter. Its research is driven by its centres and institutes, which are spread across all Spain, and its more than 13,000 staff, of who more than 3,000 are staff researchers and the same number are doctors and scientists who are still training. CSIC has 123 Institutes spread across the country and covering different areas of Science and Technology.
E.1. IRNAS-CSIC Institute:
The Institute of Natural Resources and Agrobiology of Seville (IRNAS), located in Seville, Andalusia Region. The purpose of the IRNAS is to conduct research on the use and conservation of soil-plant-water natural resources, focusing mainly on tackle problems derived from their exploitation in arid and semi-arid areas. Besides pursuing high standard scientific production of international relevance, we develop applications and tools useful for stakeholders in the agriculture and forest industries, environment protection Agencies, and Public Administration. It counts with a staff of more than 100 people of whom 35 are staff researchers, organized in four Departments: Biogeochemistry, Plant and Microbial Ecology; Agrochemistry, Environmental Microbiology and Soil Conservation; Plant Biotechnology and Protection of the Soil, Plant, Water System, the one participating in this proposal.
E.2. IDAEA-CSIC Institute:
The IDAEA-CSIC team is specialized in air quality assessment and monitoring, using state of the art air pollutant instrumentation combined with innovative monitoring strategies based on sensor networks. The team has strong expertise in source apportionment to aid in the identification of major sources impacting air quality degradation, which in turn supports the implementation of mitigation strategies. Similarly, IDAEA-CSIC is experienced in health impact assessment to translate air pollution impacts into premature mortality and morbidity outcomes, easier to understand by the general population. This combination of monitoring tools and methodologies provides the ideal framework to assess the effectiveness of innovative air quality monitoring and modelling tools. We are part of the ACTRIS ESFRI (Prior EUSAAR) for atmospheric monitoring. We have been involved in numerous EC- and nationally-funded projects and contracts with the Ministry of the Environment, WHO, and private companies, among others.
